The vows

Come on. . .  just do it Devlyn.
. . . I can't. . .
He huffed in frustration as he lowered himself to sit down on the side ledge, just outside of Airin's window.
He had stood there in indecision, trying to find a reason to go inside as much as to not go in.
He couldn't decide. What if she was scared of him? Surely, she wouldn't be. . . she never was before. She would always do the impossible to grab his attention, she was nice to him for no reason, no gain. Why?
It didn't matter, the fact of the matter was that now he sat there like an idiot trying to think of reasons NOT to go only to find more reasons TO go.
"Why. Can't. I. Decide." He emphasized each word by throwing his head back against the stone wall.
It had been several weeks after the attack. No one would tell him weather or not she was ok. . . if she was alive.
That seemed to be enough. He jumped to his feet and swung into her room in one fluid motion.
The lights were off. That was what he noticed first.
It was quiet. . . could they have moved her? Or. . . He shook his head, no, she was strong, she wouldn't die because of that. . . right?
Suddenly a sharp pain erupted from the back of his head. He growled and spun around to face the aggressor when he was face to face with Airin.
Utter relief swarm through him making him forget the pain.
"Devlyn!?" She sounded surprised . . . or perhaps frightened?
He scoffed, "Who else would it be?" Her eyes flickered with an unknown emotion.
Did I say something wrong?
"You're.... alive!" She choked on the words, her hands drawing up to her mouth in disbelief.
He frowned at her, "Of course I am. You don't think of me as that weak, do you?"
She lowered her gaze, "N. . no."
. . . Clearly, I am doing something wrong. . . . You're being too harsh, thats why.
He moved away from her, his eyes roaming around her room.
It was huge, and decorated with every essence of her. The walls were alit with colors of a soft shade of blue and the floor had a massive rug of white.
Simple, yet elegant.
"Airin. . ."He turned back to her, his mind trying to formulate what to say next; anything to break the silence.
"Is. . . Is your shoulder ok?" When he sent her a confused look she added, "I can smell the blood. Why hasn't it healed yet?"
That was a good question. It wasn't a normal wound that had been dealt to him by the demon. The bastard had infused his attack with a poison and it hindered the healing process. Devlyn's body could easily combat it, but it took time.
"Poison, but it's fine, nothing I can't handle." Though the throbbing was killing him. He subconsciously rubbed it lightly in an attempt to ease the pain.
The silence stretched between them as they struggled with their inner turmoils.
Of course she was extremely uncomfortable. All his life, he had been nothing but crude and mean to her. She had been the kindest person to him, always showing him the light in his darkness. . . He had to do something. He had to save her from falling into that pit of nothingness.
"Hey. . . Ri?" She turned her eyes in confusion at his sudden use of a nickname. He turned his gaze downward and placed his hands into his pockets, "I thought I would give you a nickname. . . since you know. . . you gave me one... Its stupid right? I'll call you Airin-"
"I love it!" She exclaimed quietly. A tender smile spreading little by little upon her face.
He couldn't help but smile in return, "Then, Ri, I have something for you." A small dark ball of energy appeared over his open palm, his eyes focused onto it and ever so softly he whispered, "Sahna". The power morphed stretching and taking the shape of a small black bird, within its beak, a bright blue rose.
The bird fluttered out of his hand, flying around the room a couple of times before landing onto Airin's outstretched hand. It ruffled its silken feathers and gazed up at her.
She gasped in delight as it dropped the rose into her hand, chirping in a tune as it twirled in joy.
"I'm sorry for what happened,Ri, but i promise. . . it won't happen again."
And he meant it, from that day on, Devlyn swore two things he intended to keep; To forever protect Airin from the malicious forces that surrounded them at all times all the while keeping her happy and content. . . the second; To track down, punish, and destroy Kieren Kuro.
